GESTALT'S MAGIC

Wishes each participant to encounter one's true self through Gestalt therapy's practical work. Gestalt therapy aims to help participants break free from constraints, stereotype thinking, and unconscious biases so that they can live authentically as their true selves. We aim for each participant to engage with others as one's natural self, fostering harmony and respect for one another's existence within organizations and society by learning and practicing Gestalt therapy and achieving existential growth. We welcome anyone interested in learning more Gestalt therapy! We are not a religion but a way of being, and we are welcome people of all faiths or no faith.

WHAT IS GESTALT THERAPY?

Gestalt therapy is a practical and highly effective therapy aimed at integrating an individual's mind and body. By working through the client's emotions and physical sensations in the “Here and Now,” it helps to bring to light new perspectives (awareness) on a new way of life and creates transformations in behavior. It helps individuals break free from blindly accepting things as they appear (introjection) or suppressing their emotions, achieving mind-body integration and living autonomously as one's true existential self. By living in this natural state, relationships with others also change, which creates harmony. Gestalt therapy can bring significant benefits not only to individuals but also to groups and organizations. In group work, I have witnessed individuals who start as strangers gradually grow into a supportive and warm group, helping each other along the way.

ゲシュタルト・セラピーとは？

ゲシュタルト・セラピーは個人の心身の統合を目的とする、前向きで実用的かつ即効性のある療法です。「今、ここ」のクライアントの感情と体感等を通してクライアントの本来の気持ちを引き出し、「気づき」によって新たな生き方の視点に目覚め、本質的な行動の変化を生みます。「鵜呑み」や自己の感情に蓋をしていたことから解放され、心身の統合を得て、自身本来の実存として自律し、自然体で生きることを目指します。自然体として生きることによって、他者との関係性も変化し、協調性を生み出すことになります。個人のみならず、グループそして組織においても、ゲシュタルト・セラピーを学ぶことによって、大きな効果を得ることが出来ます。グループ・ワークにおいては、初めは見知らぬ同士の個々が、次第にグループとして成長し、サポートし合う温かな場に、私は多く立ち会っております。

THE BEGINNING OF GESTALT THERAPY

Gestalt therapy was developed in the 1950s by Frederick “Fritz” (1893-1979) and Laura (1905-1990) Perls along with Paul Goodman (1911-1972). Frits Perls wrote “Gestalt Therapy” in 1951 and established the Gestalt Institute in New York in the early 1950s. It became popular and expanded significantly in the 1960s and 1970s in the United States.

Fritz had studied under Sigmund Freud in Germany, but later parted ways with Freudian psychotherapy and adopted a more existential and humanistic psychological approach, focusing on the individual and their awareness.

Today, Gestalt therapy is recognized by the International Association for Advanced Gestalt Therapy (IAAGT), and practiced internationally, with research institutes in many places, including in New York, Cleveland, Pittsburg, Toronto, Ireland, and London. It is taught in universities as an academic subject and is highly regarded overseas for its practical, positive, and effective approach to behavioral change.

ゲシュタルト・セラピーのはじまり

ゲシュタルト療法は1950年代に、フレデリック（フリッツ）(1893-1979)とローラ(1905-1990) パールズ夫妻とポール・グッドマン (1911-1972)によって編み出されました。フリッツ・パールズは1951年に「ゲシュタルト療法」を執筆し、50年代初頭にニューヨークにゲシュタルト・インスティテュートを設立、60年代、 70年代にアメリカにおいて大きく広がりました。フリッツ・パールズはドイツにおいてフロイトに師事しておりましたが、フロイトと袂を分かち、より実存主義的、人間性心理学的アプローチによって、個人自身と自身の気づきを中心としました。今日、ゲシュタルト・セラピーは、ゲシュタルト療法推進国際協会（International Association for Advanced Gestalt Therapy 略してIAAGT）、ニューヨーク、クリーブランド、ピッツバーグ、トロント、アイルランド、ロンドン他各地に研究所があり、学問として大学の教科として学ばれており、実践的、肯定的、行動変容に効果的であると、海外で評価されています。

GESTALT THERAPY PRACTICE

The flow of a session, whether individual or in a group setting, starts with a “check-in,” where the client talks about their feelings and physical sensations in the “Here and Now” and their expectations of the day. In Gestalt therapy, individual counseling is called “work.” In the work itself, a client can express the most pressing issue what s/he is experiencing in the “Here and Now.” This takes about an hour. At the end of the session, there is a “check-out,” where the client reflects on their feelings after the day. If there are any lingering emotions, it is important to leave them on the therapy site.

There are four ways to start “work” in Gestalt therapy: ① specific issue that are of concern, ② physical discomfort, ③ dreams, and ④ art (such as drawings, collage or cards). The most important aspect of “work” is for the client to focus on what they are feeling or thinking in the “Here and Now”.

“Work” may involve quietly sitting still through a conversation, while other time it may involve various activities through experimental suggestions by the therapist. One traditional technique used is called the “Empty Chair” method. The therapist will never lead the client in any way. Instead, the therapist will be with the client to draw their attention to their feelings in the “Here and Now” and encourage self-awareness. Fritz said that through self-integration, clients come to see themselves as part of the world, and through recognizing their connection with others, they are able to make good contact with their surroudings. Fritz wished for people to have Phenomenological point of view, in other words, to not see others through the lens of personal values, biases or societal norms, but to see them in their raw, authentic existence. Fritz believed that by adopting such a phenomenological perspective, one could avoid the hindrances created by one's own assumptions.

ゲシュタルト・セラピーの実践

セッションの流れは、個人であれ、グループ・ワークショップであれ、まず、チェック・インをしていただきます。チェック・インとは「今、ここ」の気持ちや身体の感覚を話し、またワークで何をしたいか、話したい特定の問題があるか、身体に気になるところがあるか等、自由にお話しいただきます。そして「ワーク」と呼ばれるゲシュタルト・セラピーのカウンセリング自体においては「今、ここ」で一番気になることをお話ししていただきます。セッションの最後には、チェック・アウトをしていただきます。チェック・アウトでは、セッションが終わった「今、ここ」の気持ちを話します。モヤモヤした気持ち等があれば、全てそれをこの場において帰ることが大切です。

さて、肝心の「ワーク」には、4つの入り口があります。① 気になる具体的な問題　② 身体の不調　③ 夢 ④ アート（絵、コラージュ、カード）等からワークに入ることが出来ます。一番大切なことは、あなたが「今、ここ」で感じている事、気になっている事、心に溜まっていること等をテーマにすることです。静かに座ったままのワークもあれば、セラピストの実験的提案によって多様に動くこともあります。エンプティ・チェアという技法を使うこともあります。セラピストが勝手にクライアントを誘導することはありません。セラピストは、ゆっくりとクライアントの「今、ここ」の気持ちに寄り添って、クライアント自身が自己の気持ちや感情を認識することによる「気づき」を促してゆきます。これは、クライアント自身が自分自身に関わるという関係性を促すプロセスです。

それは、ソクラテスの「産婆術」に似ているかもしれません。セラピストは、クライアント自身が自分自身に関わるという関係性のプロセスに関わるのです。そのプロセスからクライアントの自己統合（例えば、葛藤していた自分が統合される）の「瞬間」が生まれます。クライアントの実存としての統合の瞬間、時満ちた瞬間を得て、クライアントは現実的行動変容を得るのです。この瞬間をゲシュタルト療法推進国際協会（IAAGT）のNewsletter投稿者達は、正に“Gestalt’s magic”いう言葉で表現しております。これが弊会の名前G’s Magic Tokyoの由来です。クライアントのこの「自分が自分と関係することによって、統合へと向かう関係性」、セラピストは、その関係性自体に真摯に関わるのです。「クライアントが自己統合することによって、自身を世界の中の一部分であるとみることができるようになり、周囲と自分が繋がっていることの認識によって、良いコンタクトができるようになる」とパールズは話しております。そして、現象学的視点を持つこと、つまり、自分の価値観、偏見、常識の色眼鏡で他者を観ず、他者のありのままの存在を観られるようになることを、パールズは願っていました。なぜならば、そうした現象学的視点をもつことによって、自分自身の思い込みによる支障は回避されるからです。

KAYANO MIZUNO, PH.D.

Born in Tokyo in 1956, Dr. Mizuno studied at the Sacred Heart School from kindergarten through high school and graduated from the University of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo. She earned both a Master's degree in 1983 and a Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1992 from Boston College Graduate School. After returning to Japan, she worked for over 20 years at the U.S. financial firms. She has been studying Gestalt therapy since 2000, and has a lecture since 2017. Dr. Mizuno is an Industrial Counselor, a former Board member of the Japanese Association of Gestalt Therapy, a former Board member of the Japanese Association of Boston, and the former President of the Japan-America Women's Club. She currently leads Gestalt's Magic Tokyo (G's Magic).

水野賀弥乃　プロフィール

1956年東京都生まれ。聖心女子学院、幼、初、中、高等科を経て、聖心女子大学卒業。米国マサチューセッツ州ボストン・カレッジ大学院より1983年修士号、1992年哲学博士号を取得。20余年間外資系金融会社勤務。2000年よりゲシュタルト療法を学び、 2015年よりファシリテーター、2017年より講師等を務める。哲学博士、産業カウンセラー、ゲシュタルト療法学会元理事、日本ボストン会元幹事、日米婦人クラブ元会長。Gestalt’s Magic Tokyo (G’s Magic) ゲシュタルト・セラピー研究会代表。
